Overview of Position

Dow Jones is seeking a Vice President of B2C and External Communications. Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, this multifaceted role holds responsibility for all proactive and reactive communications efforts in service of Dow Jones’s consumer brands (WSJ, Barron’s, MarketWatch, IBD, Mansion Global and Penta), while leading a team dedicated to advancing external B2C communications efforts. Additionally, this role will collaborate with the B2B and internal communications team to align communications across the organization and advise on external communications needs – with the ultimate goal of protecting and strengthening the reputation of Dow Jones externally.

We are seeking a collaborative, creative, no-nonsense strategic thinker with excellent communications skills and sound media savvy. As part of the communications senior leadership team, the ideal candidate must be a self-starter, trusted advisor and culture leader across the organization.

Location: This position will be based in New York.

Reports to: Chief Communications Officer

Responsibilities

  • Strategic business advisor to senior leaders of Dow Jones’s consumer brands (WSJ, Barron’s MarketWatch, IBD etc.). Earn a seat at the table. Build strong relationships and become integrated and trusted as a valued team member.

  • Lead a team of communications professionals who support our consumer brands.

  • Develop external communications strategy to help inform current and potential readers, customers, and the general public about Dow Jones’s mission. Drive publicity for Dow Jones journalists and thought leadership and visibility for key Dow Jones executives.

  • Lead the development of content and messaging strategies; implement those strategies through development of materials, pitching stories and features, and proactive and reactive messaging - both internally and externally.

  • Develop and maintain close, productive, strategic relationships with media - both within Dow Jones and in other high-profile news outlets. Develop proactive campaigns accordingly.

  • Oversee reputation and crisis management. Conduct scenario planning for mitigating potential risks. Lead rapid response efforts to address issues, including protecting our journalists in high risk areas, geopolitical impacts on journalism and business, and manage any press inquiries in the midst of intensity or crisis.

  • Support Dow Jones’s B2C leaders to develop internal communications strategies that foster engagement within teams and alignment across verticals and functions.

  • Collaborate with other key functions, including Newsrooms, Marketing, and Experience to foster awareness and support for brand narratives and campaigns. Coordinate with Internal Communications, B2B Communications, and Communications Operations team leaders to maximize impact across all Dow Jones’s stakeholders.

Skills and Experience

  • 15+ years of experience leading communications teams and working across communications disciplines

  • Can develop influential relationships at all levels in a global matrix organization, with extensive experience advising and consulting C-suite executives

  • Demonstrated excellence in media relations and crisis management

  • Strong leadership skills and experience cultivating diverse teams and company culture

  • Ability to easily translates business objectives into effective communications strategies

  • Acts as a thought leader and proactively moves toward industry trends

  • Has strong traditional and digital media skills

  • Ability to build and maintain effective business relationships in a virtual environment is essential

  • Master’s degree in Marketing or Communications is highly preferred
