Dow Jones Photo Editor in NEW YORK, New York

Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a photo editor to join its Features team on a 6-week contract. The role will be based in our New York office, with a hybrid work schedule.

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic and fast-paced team of photo editors working on The Wall Street Journal’s real estate coverage. This desk involves a mix of research, some assigning of interiors and portraits likely and an ability to build and publish stories on the Journal’s digital platforms. The MANSION section is digitally-led, with a Friday print section.

You are a photo editor with range and journalistic integrity, with a background in features assigning and editorial production. You have experience with interiors and contemporary portraiture-and have deep research skills - both in historic and social media environments. You also have a digital, deadline-driven background and can work quickly and accurately on a range of subjects, collaborating with the newsroom’s editors and section chiefs, as well as the non-staff writers and contributors.

You will:

  • Produce and build visual assets for features content for WSJ digital and print platforms and broader global reach.

  • Assign photography - Interiors reportage, still-life and portraits, for digital and print mediums.

  • Perform historic and sophisticated general photo research.

  • Work closely with the MANSION coverage chief and deputies, art directors, SEO editors, and our platform teams.

  • Promote a diverse and exciting group of photographers and subjects, with an eye to building new audiences for our journalism.

  • Pitch visually innovative and original approaches to coverage, focusing on the online experience and demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.

  • Display commitment to digital best practices and continuous improvement as we work together to refine the content package and publishing expectations, meet KPIs and give our audience the content they want and need.

  • Maintain a budget on a monthly basis, working with the staff Mansion photo editor.

You have:

  • A background in editorial production work, conceptualization and assigning of visual content.

  • Excellent news judgment, fast digital editing skills and an expansive understanding of mobile-first experience and design.

  • At least 3-5 years experience in a photo editing role.

  • Deep research skills, including newsgathering and social media tools.

  • Strong organizational, communication and collaborative abilities.

  • A creative vision and enthusiasm to spearhead and collaborate on new ideas.

  • The drive to reach new audiences, an understanding of and appreciation for audience data and SEO-friendly presentation.

  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools.

  • A track record as a self starter who also works very well with larger teams.

This position will report to the Deputy Director of Photography, Features.

The Journal’s reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards.
