The Wall Street Journal seeks a New York-based editor to oversee a multi-disciplinary department that focuses on creating member communities and connections among our members and journalists. The editor will oversee teams that create original content in new formats, that train the newsroom on new content practices designed to give our journalism more reach, and that facilitate conversation among our audience. The team will be made up largely of reporters with skills in various mediums, SEO editors and a team of multi-media journalists focused on community-building and audience voice.
The membership engagement team sits within the Journal’s strategy department, which serves as an incubator for new technologies, audience growth, community and news innovation. The department includes the full range of journalistic talent that makes the Journal one of the leading news organizations in the world -- writers, video journalists, graphics designers, editors, product managers, engineers, designers, data scientists, artificial intelligence experts and more -- in a lively, collaborative project to discover new offerings of journalistic value. The membership engagement editor will be a close collaborator with other leaders in the strategy department, as well as leaders of the broader newsroom.
The membership engagement editor should have a mix of community-building skills; a focus on what sorts of content and experiences provide value to what types of audiences; a focus on service-oriented journalism that complements news coverage; solid editorial judgment and editing skills; knowledge of what makes good text, video and graphics stories; a creative streak and excitement about trying new things; and knowledge of SEO, optimization practices, testing and analytics.
This is one of those rare journalism jobs out there where the right candidate, versed in these areas, can break through silos and use many different skills. And it’s a job that will have great impact on what the Journal - the most trusted news brand in the country - pursues in terms of new features focused on community and service-oriented content for its members.
The membership engagement editor should be skilled at prioritizing both projects that can be done within the membership engagement team and also ones that can leverage the strengths of the Journal’s broader newsroom and involve other people. The department sits centrally in the newsroom and should have a strong connection to the ongoing pulse of the newsflow. It will also partner with the Journal’s product, design and engineering teams to make progress on product-wide initiatives.
Manage three teams in their daily work as well as longer-term toward the strategic goal of creating greater membership engagement.
As an independent contributor, work closely with the editor of newsroom strategy on the newsroom’s broader strategy.
Communicate effectively throughout the organization on status, issues and results.
Be excited about working in a constantly changing and growing environment where the process is fluid and creative and unique solutions are desired.
Minimum of 7 years in journalism and experience in a variety of content areas.
Experience on audience engagement initiatives that have shown growth results.
Demonstrated success leading, defining and launching new content initiatives and accessing opportunities backed by deep analysis and metrics.
Ability to gather user and business requirements and convert them into a winning product vision.
Ability to communicate and drum up enthusiasm for vision among editorial, design and product teammates.
Demonstrated leadership with cross-functional teams and the ability to gain cooperation from others at all levels.
Strong sense of urgency and comfort in a fast-paced, changing environment.
Knowledge of newsroom work flows, journalism standards and business news.
University degree in a relevant field.
