Director, Experience Architecture, Consumer

We are looking for a Director, Experience Architecture, Consumer to focus on setting the direction and standards for information architecture and interaction design across our B2C product portfolio, including The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch, and many others.

You will define how customers interact with our brands across multiple channels and platforms, bringing your experience and expertise in usability, information design and information architecture to create and document holistic omni-channel and multi-brand experiences.

In this hands-on role you will manage a team of Experience Architects as well as contributing to the completion of strategic projects. The ideal candidate will have a passion for user-centric design and the tools and processes that make it happen. Your expertise should bring an understanding of modular design and design systems to shape a scalable, sustainable approach that enables speed to market, evolution, and optimization. This will be a highly collaborative role requiring partnerships with SMEs, Experience Design, Technology, UX Research, Product, and Editors.

This role will report to the Senior Director, Experience Architecture, Consumer & B2B.

Responsibilities

  • Drive UX Architecture across all platforms by combining industry best practices, industry standard methodologies, metrics, and analytics with your expertise.

  • Lead and mentor a team of Experience Architects

  • Take a hands on role in driving the conceptualization and momentum for projects, from creating conceptual sketches to user flows to wireframes and functional specs

  • Contribute to the definition of our core UX principles and ensure their implementation in our solutions. Be hands on to deliver solutions via Design System, defining interaction models, consistent user interactions, documentation and building components.

  • Frame problems, define insights, and design new methodologies/practices to serve customer needs

  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Experience Architecture to create holistic, reusable solutions across Consumer and B2B

  • Collaborate across the Experience Architecture team to help set standards for process, communication and documentation on how we analyze, optimize and communicate our users’ interactions with our products

  • Bring a strong culture of Information Architecture to our products, creating wholistic navigational solutions that encourage site exploration and connect brands

  • Evangelize the importance of modular design, create interaction patterns in our design system and help to drive adoption of the design system

  • Build a customer-centric culture through the use of methodologies including Design Thinking and Participatory Design.

  • Partner with domain area SMEs and Product to identify opportunities to improve the architecture and experience of our digital products

  • Collaborate with Product on how UX can contribute to achieving business objectives and ensure that solutions support specific business goals

  • Partner and participate in workshops with the Workshops Lead, as well as internal and external stakeholders to align user goals with business needs

  • Collaborate with Technology and other partners on the use of metadata to organize and connect content

  • Collaborate with our news rooms to understand and meet editorial goals, and ensure that editorial workload, dependencies, and sustainability are understood and factored in the solution to a project.

  • Create a collaborative relationship with our Customer Insights and UX Research teams, creating test materials, hypotheses and criteria as well as incorporating recommendations and analysis into the UX process

  • Work with our Accessibility lead to ensure that we meet standards for accessibility and include it in our process

  • Define, scope and budget Experience Architecture work required for projects and initiatives

  • Storytelling through business acumen and presenting visual concepts to various stakeholders

  • Last but never least, serve as an advocate for our readers, keeping their needs at the heart of our digital solutions

  • Role requires 3 days each week in office (as per current mandate, may change)

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

  • 12+ years of experience in CX or UX, spanning strategy, research, and design

  • Strong grasp of UI, HCI and UX principles

  • Fluency in best practices for mobile, web-based and responsive design

  • Experience in information architecture, user and screen flows, conceptual and detailed wireframing, and prototyping tools

  • An in-depth understanding of Information Architecture as it pertains to usability on digital products

  • Experience working with large-scale publishing and CMS environments

  • Experience in the design and usability of news, data-rich or financial services web and mobile solutions

  • Experience working with Design Systems, including setup and structure, as well as creating and reusing components

  • Experience managing and mentoring teams

  • Experience working in an Agile environment.

  • Expertise with Figma

  • Strong proficiency with G-suite products and experience with professional collaboration tools such as, Jira, Miro, Confluence and Airtable.

  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates your experience and UX skills showcased in several case studies as well as clear examples of of products that rely on metadata for informational organization, navigation and user pathing

  • Great communication skills, workshop facilitation and presentation skills including the ability to speak to the specifics and benefits of the user-centered design process.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity and demonstrated ability to self start

  • Familiarity with WCAG accessibility standards and compliance

  • Knowledge of Services Design and Service Mapping

  • Experience with Semantic Design
