We are looking for a Design Director to set the design direction and standards for The Wall Street Journal online.
As Design Director, you will collaborate with product, technology, marketing, data, insights, and advertising teams to elegantly solve problems for users while driving business value. In this leadership role, you will help hire and mentor other designers in a fast-paced environment alongside an ambitious team.
The Design Director will report directly to the Creative Director, Consumer Products.
The Design Director for WSJ will contribute to ideation and evolution of our products and be held responsible for the level of design.
You will also contribute to the tools that will power our growth. This includes process and methodologies to ensure we are customer-focused and that our visual vocabulary, interaction patterns, and design system enable the mission and communicate the voice of WSJ.
As Design Director for WSJ you will be responsible for building and mentoring a strong design team within the department, creating a culture of excellence in ideas and execution, collaborating across departments and creating connections across DJ through regular communications and reports.
Provide creative thought leadership and drive visual design for the all WSJ products, combining industry best practices, industry standard methodologies, metrics, and analytics with your expertise
Provide strategic guidance to ensure that design solutions support specific business goals
Collaborate with the Director of UX Architecture on solutions
Communicate and implement the larger Experience strategy in the work done by the WSJ Team
Lead the design team in ideation and concept explorations, partnering with Product, Engineering, and other internal partners to shape experience of consumer-facing products
Contribute to the growth of our design system and its application in projects
Direct brainstorming meetings and creative sessions
Ensure that the customer stays front and center in our solutions through the use of methodologies including Design Thinking and Participatory Design
Partner with peers to create a connected experience across the Dow Jones’ portfolio which includes our consumer products, The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch, and our B2B products, Factiva, NewsWires, and Risk & Compliance
Meet with stakeholders and upper management to get input and communicate strategies and solutions
Regular meetings and coordination with Product and Technology, including timelines and resource management
Regular updates on projects, team status, and resourcing
Remain actively involved in hiring and training of creative staff, including the career development of staff members
Regular meetings with direct reports including feedback and guidance on individual projects
Guide the team to deliver projects that are exceptional creatively and impeccable technically.
On time delivery of UX and creative deliverables
Hands on work as required
Degree in design, computer science, human factors or equivalent work experience.
Design professional with 7 or more years of relevant work experience.
3+ years in previous leadership roles and can effectively oversee the quality and efficacy of our digital team’s work.
Experience working in an Agile environment.
Strong strategic, conceptual skills and a deep knowledge of the digital landscape.
Demonstrated ability to design inspiring new solutions to challenges, often in collaboration with end users and stakeholders.
Proven experience in design direction.
Experience working with and designing for large-scale publishing and data-rich systems
Experience working with multiple types of users with different needs and goals.
Outstanding facilitation, brainstorming and collaboration skills.
Superior communication and reporting skills.
Proven experience with methodologies including Design Thinking, Participatory Design, and Service Design and a personal design approach that includes iteration and testing.
Experience working with Design Systems.
Experience building and mentoring teams.
Familiarity with WCAG accessibility standards and compliance.
