This position will be based in our New York City office and will report to the Director of Photography.

You Will:

  • Maintain a high quality of photographic assigning, execution and research across your assigned coverage areas.

  • Manage a team of photo editors, providing constructive feedback on projects and fostering professional growth.

  • Lead the team in the production of innovative online visual storytelling using photography and multimedia in collaboration with graphics and visual editors, art directors and developers.

  • Recruit and promote a diverse and vibrant group of photographers and subjects with an eye to new audiences.

  • Attend weekly bureau and art meetings and work closely with coverage chiefs, digital and print editors, graphics and art colleagues on daily and enterprise coverage.

  • Oversee the distributed budget of the team effectively with quarterly check-ins.

  • Keep stakeholders apprised of all projects by maintaining departmental project lists and attending relevant meetings to ensure all milestones and editorial requirements are met.

  • Work with platform leads on the planning, scheduling and strategy of digital projects across WSJ platforms.

  • Help direct and create new workflows and processes in a fast-paced, global, and networked newsroom.

  • Recommend and lead change where required to strengthen the team and our journalism.

  • Work closely with the Photography Director on broader departmental and organizational projects.

You Have:

  • At least five years of experience leading a team of visual journalists in close collaboration with text journalists and editors in a newsroom, or other editorial setting.

  • Excellent news judgment, a strong interest in design and an expansive understanding of the mobile-first editorial experience.

  • Experience with people and performance management in a highly collaborative environment.

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with experience building consensus and motivating different personalities and teams.

  • A creative vision and enthusiasm to share and collaborate on new ideas.

  • Experience managing change, creating new processes and workflows.

  • The ability to work in different CMS and digital tools, with the initiative to take on and learn new tasks in a fast-moving environment.

  • Ideally, some knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

  • The drive to work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines, while balancing short- and long-term projects.

  • Passion for fostering an environment where reporters and editors can learn news skills that will contribute to their visual storytelling.

The Journal’s reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards.
