Creating amazing and insightful visualizations with data is a passion of yours. Leveraging strong design mindsets, you regularly create visual stories through data using tools like D3. You’ve mastered Javascript and have strong opinions on React, Vue and Angular. You enjoy prototyping new ideas just to see if they’ll actually work. You frequently take the lead on important projects and have strong opinions on team process.

You’re also a news junkie. You get push notifications from several news apps when something newsworthy happens. You might have even published a few pieces yourself. You’re looking for more than just another engineering job. You firmly believe in the public mission of journalism and its importance in our society. You want your work to have an impact.

Role:

The Wall Street Journal is looking to further increase our understanding of the WSJ audience and how they connect to our journalism. Under our Digital Experiences and News Insights teams, we are building internal data products to serve our newsroom. These applications will cover in-depth reports of articles, data-driven insights of our coverage, and real-time feeds. These products will help our newsroom reporters, editors, and leadership drive the future of WSJ. Together with a team of full stack engineers, data engineers, and data scientists, this role will look to enable the next generation front-end data experiences for our newsroom.

We’re looking for you to:

  • Create top quality data visualizations for The Wall Street Journal’s newsroom, to help our editors and reporters better understand their audience.

  • Work closely with journalists, designers, data scientists, product managers and other engineers to build impactful data products.

  • Play an active role in the product development process.

  • Contribute to the front-end platforms behind our internal data products.

We’d like you to have:

  • 2-3 years general web development experience with HTML, CSS and Javascript. Experience with React, D3, and Node.js is a huge plus.

  • A strong background in software engineering and computer science fundamentals.

  • Strong design thinking and a track record of creating unique data visualizations.

  • A natural curiosity and desire to understand and even contribute to the entire technology stack.

  • A passion for storytelling and creativity to introduce new ideas and technologies. If you have a background in journalism, even better!

If this describes you, then we’d love to talk to you!
